influenced by the proximity of objects or other organisms (inhibit or
promote growth);

modulated by available [sources of food] light [for plants]
(heliotropism == sun seeking).
Conjectures :

Voxel representation simplifies sensing of the environment by growth
processes.

Also facilitates ray casting and a variety of other geometric
operations.
