You Must Remember This: Factors Affecting Musical Memory ... or Not (13/10/08)

In different contexts, memory for music seems quite easy; in other contexts, memory for music is difficult. Taking an overview of many of my studies over the years, I examine how four factors are related to success in various musical memory tasks: musical training, aging, study conditions, and musical transformations. Some of these factors have expected relationships with memory, some have unexpected relationships, and some appear to have little relationship at all. In general, memory for music does not always follow principles derived from studies with other kinds of materials.
