OPENEER: Raising the bar for MIR systems (16/04/09)

Music Information Retrieval (MIR) as an interdisciplinary research discipline achieved impressive progress over the last decade. The iTunes Music Store, Pandora, Last.fm or MyStrands are successful commercial music services, offering previously unavailable choice and convenience for customers. Such systems offer personalised music recommendations, based on relevance feedback over content-based, expert-based or community metadata. However, taking into account highly personal characteristics, such as emotions and personal experiences, is still a challenge. Our community website OPENEER seeks to raise the bar for future MIR systems, moving beyond acceptable or interesting music to delivering music that raises goosebumps or, more scientifically, "strong emotional responses", as coined by Gabrielsson (1989).
