How useful is the concept of Tonailty?

Niall Griffith

Although this title may seem a trifle provocative what I would like to do is discuss my own experience in developing a model of tonal induction and reflections on the issues it raise - most of which are still unresolved. Cognitive musicology has a strong conceptual legacy from music theory and music psychology - which focuses on western tonal music. Western tonal music with its emphasis on the dominance of pitch and rhythm is not, however, the only paradigm.
