Space0.00

Space0.00 is a projection mapping artwork on two shapes with triple layers drop structure. It has eight scenes which were inspired by and design with the structure of the model.

produced by: Xinyu Sun

Introduction

Space0.00 begins with three simple illuminated squares that fit in each shape and flashing from slow to fast with the edge of shapes, Then the whole shape is lit in white which shows the structure of the boxes. Then the next two scenes are an abstract generative graphic which simulates the movement and glowing body of jellyfish. the 5 remaining scenes are designed with the shape’s feature and play with space by moving and rotate multiple squares in order to bring a mesmerising experience to audiences.

Concept and background research

I was inspired by “win > < win” of Rimini Protokoll, It’s an installation of a giant swirling tank of the jellyfish. Visitors are divided into two opposite rooms on two sides of the tank then we put on headphones and listen to a long story about how the jellyfish live and rise. "Rising water temperatures have been a boon for the tentacled invertebrates, which are increasingly taking over the oceans." Another voice says that "Warm water is a disaster for anything that breathes and a dream come true for anything that doesn’t breathe much, like jellyfish." It was an impressive experience, not only the story of jellyfish but the interaction with visitor opposite the tank. The feeling of space and time was mesmerising. So I choose to make a drop structure box for mapping. And designed the scenes and graphic according to the feature of the model.

Technical

I worked with OpenFrameworks with C++ and mainly used loops, sin/cos and noise to generate graphics. For the model, I used the laser cut and glue gun to build the demo and model for the show with cardboard. There are 8 scenes in total.

Future development

I will possibly like to explore more about visual and space and add more variation within the scenes, and I might try to add more element in my work, such as adding flexible calculation and sound in my programme, working based on data, or change data in real-time for performance.

Self evaluation

Personally speaking, through the coding and visualization of the original idea. I was pleased with the effect of the piece during the pop-up show which was a great chance for practice. But I think the more In-depth topic and working is what I should develop in the future.
